So, really who is the monster in the hollows?? Is it Kalmar?? or maybe Gnag? No, Gnag was never in the hollows and Kalmar ended up being good. I can’t put my finger on who. Maybe Bonifer? I don’t know. Help?

I think it is a trick title. I think there are actually 3 monsters in the hollows, although you could argue for even more.
I think Bonifer is the most monstrous, for obvious reasons. But he looks the least like a monster.
Kal is the one everyone thinks is a monster, because of how he looks. And he did do some bad things. But he wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought he was.
Esben was a monster in form, but he was the least monstrous in actions. He didn’t hurt anyone. He saved Bonnie and tried to save his children too.
I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the point of this book is for the people of the Green Hollows (and perhaps us as well) to realize that even if our outsides look ok, we are all capable of being monsters. But also to realize that even obvious monsters, whose guilt shows on the outside, are also capable of doing right. People are not so simple as just good or just evil, so evil cannot be excluded by just getting rid of the “Bad people.” We can all be monsters sometimes.

I agree, a true monster is not one who looks monstrous or who is of a kind that is called monsters, it is what shows from the heart. Kal and Esben were not truly monsters, even if they looked and were called monsters. It was Bonnifer Squoon, because of his actions, that made him a true monster.
